Firms are navigating an era of unprecedented change, characterised by pressures of “digital transformation”, global competition and shifting client expectations — which requires placing people front and centre.
Historically, human resources has been perceived as a necessary but costly back-office function, but its potential to drive value in professional services industries cannot be underestimated.
The PwC Law Firms’ Survey 2022, for example, found rising staff turnover almost across the board — by an average of 22% among those with one-to-two years’ post-qualification experience in the top 100 firms. The IBA Young Lawyers’ Report cited 20% of lawyers aged 40 and under were thinking of leaving the profession entirely, and The Law Society’s 2023 Practicing Certificate Holder Survey found that workplace satisfaction was “generally lower” among the top 200 firms — making it clear that systemic change is required.
