What the release of Windows 10 means for IT services

Background
Windows 10 is the latest release of the Windows operating system, called Windows 10 as it is meant to be a big step from Windows 8.1 and looks to further unify the Windows, Windows Phone and Windows Embedded product families.

Microsoft Windows 10 aims to combine the best aspects of Windows 7 and Windows 8 whilst introducing further improvements, such as:

  • the ability to run on PCs, laptops, tablets and phones;
  • a re-introduction of the desktop Start menu (as per Windows 7);
  • an improved user interface for non-touch screen devices for those who are familiar with Windows 8
  • a virtual desktop system;
  • the possibility to run Windows Store Apps within Windows on the desktop.

What’s our verdict?
Windows 10 made a big push in terms of apps (especially the Universal Apps), and is undeniably a great improvement from Windows 8 in that respect. We find the user interface is very intuitive and we like the return of the familiar Start menu, and the new ‘task view’. If you’ve become used to Windows 8 though, then you’ll have to adjust, for example, to the absence of little icons on the right hand side.

Overall, we found that not much has changed (certainly not in the operating system itself), and none of the changes are ground-breaking. The one thing worth noting from a security perspective is that Microsoft has changed its default privacy settings; make sure you opt out of Windows 10’s intrusive defaults and customise your privacy settings when you install it.

Our advice about upgrading
You might be tempted to upgrade to Windows 10 right away, especially if you can do so without a charge, but you’re probably wise to wait for Microsoft to iron out any early issues and until they perfect the new release and upgrade process. Otherwise you might find yourself facing compatibility issues with certain software or printers, for example. If your laptop is encrypted, definitely wait until your provider has certified their product before you upgrade.
