How Hill Dickinson is taking bundling to the next level with Bundledocs

Having used the Bundledocs solution for almost a year, Hill Dickinson’s head of information services David Smith and head of legal tech and innovation Edmund Chan explain how it has helped to take the stress out of bundling, and improve collaboration and transparency

Document bundling is a complex job, which can often bring headaches to those tasked with it, says David Smith, head of information services at Hill Dickinson. Previously armed with only a couple of standard PDF-based technology solutions for their bundling needs, those dealing with these tasks at his firm would often find it frustrating and difficult to complete. “Certainly, for our litigators, the tech was clunky, didn’t really meet their needs, and didn’t integrate in a straightforward way with our document management system,” he explains.

The firm didn’t want to proliferate technology, preferring to use existing tools that it’s already leveraging. However, seeing and hearing directly from people about their struggles with bundling made Hill Dickinson more open to considering alternative solutions.

When Bundledocs approached to discuss a potential collaboration in autumn 2023, the law firm was intrigued and suitably impressed with signs of the provider’s helpful approach and intuitive tech. And so, it chose to trial the solution in January 2024 with 10 of its bundling experts that needed it the most — primarily paralegals, and legal administration assistants.

What started as an initial test for the firm to dip a toe in and see what the tech provider would bring to the table soon expanded organically. After the initial trial, the following eight months saw Hill Dickinson expand use to other parts of the firm, including lawyers in the health business group, shipping, commercial dispute resolution and litigation practices — with the latter particularly benefitting given the high volumes. To date, the firm now has grown to have over 100 Bundledocs users, and continues to expand.
