Knowledge as a strategic bridge to the future with Elite
Global law firm CMS is taking a portfolio approach to exploring generative artificial intelligence (genAI) tools and uses, says Colin Fisher, head of knowledge for CMS UK.
Having led the function for the past five years, he says knowledge now sits under the wider innovation umbrella: “Given how this technology will impact our work, it’s the right place for the function to be the strategic bridge between what we choose to do and how we do it going forward.”
It’s all part of CMS’s aim to lead the way as a “future-facing firm” — largely reflected by being front of the pack in exploring AI — having access to the best tools, leading expertise to advise clients on how to approach AI, and with a firm-wide understanding of how to use it effectively.
So, when the chance to partner with Thomson Reuters on developing new genAI capabilities arose, he found it was a natural fit. The technology and content provider are “a hugely strategic partner” for the firm, he says, with many of its solutions including Practical Law, Westlaw and HighQ “built into our lawyers’ day-to-day workflows”.
