Latest Osprey podcast shares secrets to being a successful law firm leader
Osprey Approach announces that the latest episode in its interview series, Empowering Law Firm Leaders, is now available to watch and listen for free on YouTube, Spotify, and Amazon Music. In this latest conversation, Simon Tupman – global legal consultant and author of The Heart of Practice: Leadership Principles for Legal Professionals – shares his expertise on what makes a successful law firm leader.
In the seventh episode, Simon, formerly a criminal defence lawyer, joined Amy Bruce, head of marketing at Osprey Approach, to discuss what makes a good leader, how to build a high-performing team and culture effectively, and advice for future leaders.
The conversation covers: –
- The unique challenges faced by law firm leaders
- How to build an effective leadership team
- Characteristics of a good leader
- Success measures leaders should use to track long-term success
- Advice for future law firm leaders
Simon believes there are three lessons all leaders should implement and strive for to run a successful legal business for the long term, namely, running a firm as a business; being yourself; and looking to the future – and competition: – “be aware of not only what other firms are doing, but also look outside for examples of good business practice and innovation and how that might apply to your firm.”
One of the imbedded beliefs Simon discusses, is that partnership equals leadership: “Our thoughts and preconceptions around leadership have been confined to the partnership table and focuses on leadership being about having the moral authority to tell people what to do. That’s a very narrow view of leadership that doesn’t work in today’s market, particularly for young professionals.”

Osprey’s Empowering Law Firm Leaders podcast series follows the success of its Build Better Habits’ webinars and takes a critical look at the key topics that will empower legal leaders and teams to help make running a law firm easier.
